Hey folks!
Sorry for the lack of posts, but honestly there isn't a whole lot to tell. Things have been pretty normal. I went out for dinner and ice cream Monday and Tuesday with the other kids from my program. It is always very relaxing to hang out with people whose native tongue is the same as your own. I was going to go to dinner with them again tonight, but I didn't get off work until the same time that I was supposed to meet them. I'll send everyone an email in the morning to apologize.
Otherwise, everything is fairly routine. There is lots of work to do, because Pingkalai and I have worked out a way for me to do both the molecular biology stuff that I enjoy and the behavioral assays, which aren't bad but which I don't enjoy as much. I will admit that I just started doing the behavioral assays with the mutant flies and that is rather fascinating because they act so differently than the wild type flies.
I'm also trying to speak more German in the lab. I'm pretty sure I surprised Bjorn today, because he came by to ask if anyone had gone to lunch yet, and I told him (auf Deutsch, of course) that we had already eaten. Judging from the look on his face, it definitely caught him off guard. Hehe. I've also been having small conversations with Ute and Pingkalai in German. I know it's a bit late to start now but I suppose every bit of practice helps.
I still don't have any plans for the weekend but I will see what I can work out tomorrow and Friday. Maybe I can take a trip to Hannover or Kassel just for the day. Those are both fairly close by train so I wouldn't mind going alone.
Anyway, that is everything from Germany! Love you all!

YOU'RE ALIVE!! I cannot tell you how many times I have clicked on the German Experiment looking for news from my baby! But don't feel guilty - it really is difficult once you settle into a routine and there really isn't much to report.
ReplyDeleteI have given Nick the option of calling me Mom Margaret, Mom Craiger or Mom #2, whichever he is most comfortable with. Guess he told you already that Pastor Brent happily agreed to co-officiate your wedding.
Dad has jury duty tomorrow if the case doesn't settle out of court. And again on July 22 and 23. They hit him up every year. You only have to serve once every 3 years, but if the cases settle out of court and you don't actually have to go to the Courthouse, they can summons you EVERY year. With over 120,000 people in Stafford County, it looks like they could call someone else once in a while! Once he turns 70 he can opt out, permanently.
I am doing okay. Some days are better than others. Looks like it is going to take the full 6 weeks of recovery to get back to normal. And then the radiation treatments will start and mess me up all over again!! Oh well, this too shall pass.
What nationality is Pingkalai's husband? Dad and I were just wondering. Glad things are working out to your satisfaction in the lab. And what could be more fun than playing with MUTANT fruit flies! Take care! Love you! Mom
Ahhhhh! My blog fix for the day. :-) It's so good to hear from you. The two new ND games came in yesterday. I think I'm about halfway through with Castle Malloy, but I'll put that on hold so I can at least get one of the new ones finished so you can take it to VCU with you. :-) Fun, fun, fun!! My work is so mundane that the ND games keep my mind sharp. A little brain stimulation is good.
ReplyDeleteWorking with those flies sounds kinda neat. I'm glad you're enjoying it. We miss you!!!
"Wir haben schon gegessen." Right? Isn't that the way to say "We have already eaten"? It's funny, the girls and I just worked on that phrase. And "ich mag nicht bier." :-)
ReplyDeleteI was starting to go through withdrawal those few days you didn't record anything...I'm better now that I've got my fix.
